Intent:
At Galleywood Infant School our music curriculum intends to ignite creativity, broaden self-expression and connection with others, as well as offer up a rich and enjoyable experience of music in its many forms. Children will find their voice through singing, performing and composing and they will develop their knowledge of this subject through listening to and appraising pieces from a variety of cultural and historical styles and traditions. They will develop their understanding of the structure of music and its vocabulary so that they can become confident and reflective musicians who can benefit from the enduring and positive influence music can have on their lives.
Implementation:
Our music curriculum is delivered by a specialist music teacher, with children accessing music lessons every week. Through our music curriculum and wider music offer we ensure that all children:
- Have the opportunity to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions.
- Are exposed to the works of famous composers and a range of musicians.
- Are taught to sing through music lessons and weekly singing assemblies.
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated. They learn about and begin to use pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre and appropriate musical notations to compose their own pieces of music and discuss the work of others.
Our children are taught to perform, compose and create using a range of tuned and untuned percussion instruments from EYFS through to the end of Year 2. They have opportunities to perform in groups within lessons but also as a school to the wider community as part of special celebrations, such as Easter and Christmas. Weekly piano lessons are available to children who wish to develop their love of music further.
